YouTube exec: We're heading for 'third wave' of TV

By Mark Milian, CNN

Laguna Niguel, California (CNN) – In YouTube's vision of the future, television will look a little like video games.

According to Google video head Salar Kamangar, connected TV will usher in an era of programming that will allow viewers to interact with content on their screen. He discussed his thoughts on where video entertainment is headed Tuesday at News Corp.'s D: Dive Into Media conference here.

The changes will constitute TV's "third wave," in which smaller groups of people gravitate toward thousands of niche channels, Kamangar said. The first wave refers to broadcast networks (few options, huge audiences), and the second to cable channels (hundreds of options, each with smaller audiences).

"We want YouTube to be the platform of these next generation of channels," Kamangar said.

TV programs should have "gamification" components, meaning viewers will be rewarded for participating like in a video game, Kamangar said. Shows should be shaped by feedback from viewers left as comments, he said. (Good luck making sense out of many of the comments posted below YouTube videos.)

For example, a show's ending should be shaped by fan input, Kamangar said. Will Wright, the video-game designer who created "The Sims" and "SimCity," has done some of this sort of experimentation for his show "Bar Karma" on second-wave network Current TV.

Sports provides some particularly interesting scenarios for exploiting third-wave technologies. During a football game, viewers could choose which helmet camera they want to watch from, Kamangar said. Friends could sit their avatars next to each other in the stadium, he said.

They even could vote, along with everyone else in the virtual stadium, on which play the quarterback should run, he added.

"This is possible over IP," Kamangar said, using a technical term to describe the Internet. "It's not possible (yet), but it will be possible."

I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I've had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Thanks!|

This is not a new idea. We had this in the late 70's and early 80's in Columbus, Ohio with Warner "Qube". Crude by today's standards it had a plastic control box connected to a cable box by a wire. There were mechanical buttons allowing the viewer to interact with game shows, surveys, interviews and news programs in real time with immediate feedback. As I recall, they also had contests where you cold win a prize. It was pretty advanced at the time and was, I believe, the first and only technology of its type that involved a direct link between the cable company and the viewer without the need for mobile phone, texting or other third party network.

I am surprised its taking them another 30 plus years to get around to re-introducing what we thought was a great concept.

as you said it was "wired" it hasnt taken 30 years to go wireless. that was in the 80's. this is 2012. were everyone wants the fastest internet, newest phone, best gps, computer, xbox, ps3, bluray player, netflix, redbox, mp3 player, blackberry, android tablets. we dont need wired connections anymore.

Youtube was more than ruined. They openly let little children have accounts. They've completely caved in to online predators, re-vamping the channel formats so as to make it incredibly easy for pedophiles to contact kids and entice them into producing illegal videos for them. They remove videos that expose the criminals and their actions while allowing said criminals to leave filthy and disgusting comments to young kids. Despite continuous reporting to Youtube and law enforcement, the problem has only gotten worse. What the hell is going on?

Today’s television programming sucks not worth watching !
Time Warner , Time life , General Electric , CBS , NBC Universal , Disney , these companies and others supplies movie programming to satellite television DISH and DIRECT and CABLE companies. the FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, and the Better Business Bureau, Need to investigate these companies, they are ripping the American people off $$$, they are gaming us, and they are not being fair, !

“”There are hundreds of good movies being held hostage”” not being shown from the 70s to the 90s even early 2000s, providers should be showing these movies for free! No one wants to rent them anymore.
Look at SATELLITE Television and their regular programming nothing but sh** on, ” They Are Deliberately Making Their Programming BORING As Possible.

“They are – FORCING – the American people to buy their most recent released pay movies and extra pay channels like HBO and others for movies ”. $$$
The FCC and Better Business Bureau needs to look into this, entertainment providers they are not being fair with the American people, “they are Gaming us for every dollar they can get out of us”. THIS IS EXTORTION WAKE UP AMERICA !

You need to get in contact with your congressmen and senators and have “ entertainment providers” Investigated They Are Not Doing The American People Right

Uh, when did television become a protected right? Last I checked, you aren't required to have a television or a provider. You have a what providers are asking you to pay or dump your provider. People need to wake up and start voting with their wallets instead of demanding legislation for their entertainment. Voting for legislators won't get you anywhere because the cable companies, movie companies and broadcast companies have them in their pockets!

That's all well and good, but the big question to ask is how will it all happen if cable providers like Comcast control the gateway to the content? What about Apple's iTV? Where and how will that fit into the equation? Will it cause another 'disruption'? And let's not forget about that Facebook, with over 800 million users! Do you think they will sit quietly while the TV platform is being re-shaped before our eyes? Who will control the content and how will advertising revenue be distributed? The ramifications of all this are unreal. It will be very, very interesting to see how it all comes together.

This is just a bad idea. I can see the appeal if it were implemented into virtual reality but Sam said it best- People don't want to work at watching television. You just want to kick back and be entertained. I personally don't watch football but if I did, I would want to be surprised by a play. And any tv show that would let you determine the outcome wouldn't be worth watching to begin with. The interesting shows to watch have been thought out and already have a direction. As for just using the internet for watching tv shows and movies, I have done that and I miss cable. The internet still has a ways to go before it can replace cable. I absolutely can't stand having to wait for a show to queue up before I can watch it.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a fantastic cocmenme, but it is currently hampered by the inability to shop locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit charge. If this adjustments, then it will fairly negate this advantage for the Zune, but the ten songs for each month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

There should be a way to turn off pop-up ads on your screen by way of a preference pane in your TV setup. Please.

Bad enough I have to deal with commercials (I know they pay the bills so I can deal with them), but YouTube is a cluster f*** of a mess and they are the last place I would go for content.

I had an AppleTV 2 for all of a day before I boxed it up and sent it back.
Way to much work and $2 one show in standard def..... ONE SHOW!
    No value there at all.

Give me an on screen TV guide and a clicker and I'm good to go.

He said Apple TV was way overpriced (it is) because it was $2 for a single episode of a show in standard definition. He didn't say it was hard to setup. When Netflix is $8/month for all-you-can-eat, paying per show seems a little obtuse.

"He didn't say it was hard to setup."

Uh, actually he said "way too much work."

Netflix may be cheap, but the content is thin and OLD. Not at all the same thing.

This is a naive idea that geeks often have. I was at the MIT media lab in the 1980's and we thought of the same thing. Interactive TV! Back then the idea was joysticks every viewer would have, and as they'd watch a murder mystery, for example, the audience could instantly vote whether to ask person A a question, or find person B, etc. Then the (then) laser disc player would quickly continue the storyline based on what they voted. Oops, turns out people just want to sit back and be entertained, they don't want to have to make decisions. As others have already noted above.

The problem with that study is it was done in the 80s, most gamers were 5 to 10 years old then. The gaming crowd is now the dominant entertainment consumer. Cliff notes, that's not a valid study any more.

Call me anti social but I stopped watching the crap on television 20 years ago. This "New" media format does nothing to improve the content but does allow for more intrusive advertising. It will only lower standards even further. I am grateful I am intelligent enough to entertain myself in more fulfilling ways . . .

Making TV more 'game like' will only promote young viewers to spend even more time sitting on the couch instead of being active. Child obesity will soon become the new normal (and it's almost there now).

The last thing I want to see on my TV screen are prompts to vote every 60 seconds, poll results flashing in the corner, viewer comments scrolling across the bottom of the screen continuously, or any other distracting nonsense. The ubiquitous animated channel logos and pop-up ads for what's "coming up next" are already way too intrusive. I don't watch a lot of TV, but when I do I want to relax and concentrate on the show, not be assaulted by visual clutter and sensory overload.

WDE, I completely agree. It seems like a channel distracting us with such clutter is like them saying, yeah, we think this show sucks but if you stay tuned we'll show something better soon.

I like that this only applies to THIRD WAVE. It suggests that things won't change with the current programming, only the new third wave. If fans are generating input instead of the creative minds behind the programming it will result in fewer creative minds needed and would result in a cheaper medium. I think it could work because it wouldn't steal very many resources from the first two waves.

"For example, a show's ending should be shaped by fan input, Kamangar said. "

LOL, this statement is made by someone who obviously isnt creative and would just like a show that is written by a group of fans (forget things like long term story line, continuity or logical character development) so that , like most people today, he wont have to put in much effort and can get other people to willingly work for free.

Then again, considering the span of attention nowadays maybe long term storyline and actual character development would be passe as we are only looking to keep our brain busy, not really enjoy what we are watching or doing. Show of hands, how many just absently minded turn on a game or show when not otherwise occupied and just tune out, even though you are watching/doing something....lots I bet. Considering the instances of accidents involving those with earbuds in just walking out into traffic are up considerably (see article, CNN within last few days), I would have to say there are a vast majority that just arent present in their own life half the time.

The continued dumbing-down of Uhmerka. I can just see tv in our near future, just like Idiocracy...Ow, My Balls!!!, and "go away! 'Batin!!"

    What a joke.

A qb will only listen to his coach(es) whether a virtual stadium agrees or not. Voting on plays should be all in fun. I doubt it will happen.... However, we should not base our decision on books about people dreaming of futuristic things having bad endings. After all Jules Verne predicted trips to the moon, under the sea, around the world in 80 days...all perceived as ludicrous in the 19th century but taken for granted in the 21st.

Posted on Anika, you bring up a point that I meant to include there and kind of foogrt to: Padme is the best contribution to Star Wars that the prequels made. She is a fabulous character that doesn't get enough to do.Jennifer, if you like prequel-era Obi-wan, you should read Matt Stover's Episode III novelization. In fact, all three of the prequel novelizations are probably worthwhile, and contribute a bit to my general like of the films. Terry Brooks' Episode I goes much darker and less campier than its counterpart, and Stover's Revenge of the Sith is an excellent sci-fi/fantasy novel, not just an excellent film adaptation (R. A. Salvatore's paint-by-numbers Episode II novel isn't anything special, but it makes the romance a bit more palatable, in my opinion).Dan: UR BR8KNG MAI ❤

I can see this happening....FB will revolutionize life as we know it...when it gets on the market and starts the beginning of a minority report/artificial intelligence type of word where personal info is owned and used by companies to bring you personal order to reach these points the internet may have to become completely free of charge and available anywhere which will also probably happen once everyone( tele companies) upgrades there existing network infastructure( also creating jobs) to 4g and beyond to the most effcient network technology... ALSO JUST BECAUSE U CAN VOTE ON PLAYS ON SCREEN DOES NOT MEAN THE QUARTERBACK HAS TO RUN THAT PLAY. IT COULD BE AN ADDED FEATURE, SOMETHING LIKE A GAME FOR VIEWERS THAT WIN PRIZES FOR CALLING THE MOST PLAYS RIGHT....MY GOD HUMANS HAVE BECOME SO CLOSED MINDED-NO WONDER WE AS A PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN ALMOST TO A BREAKING POINT

Yeah right, like companies are going to give control over to their users for everything. As amazing as the idea would be, it will never happen because giving up control is tantamount to heresy. Imagine if you were driving a car, and people would vote on where you were going to eat lunch, or what jobs you interview for. You would never let that happen. Why would the NFL let the fans choose plays? It's a great idea, but not realistic.
